Biology Club-“Bio Summit” Final Round

The Biology Club participated in the final round of the “14th High School Student Bio Summit in Tsuruoka” (sponsored by Keio University Institute of Advanced Life Sciences, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture) from August 21st-23rd.

After prior document screening, 2 projects studies of the biology club successfully passed the preliminary round (August 7th, ZOOM) from the applications of 18 prefectures (95 cases: 63 schools, 178 students), and participated in the finals. In the final round, there were 40 projects in the “Result Presentation Division” and15 projects in the “Plan Presentation Division” with strict examination guidelines (4 minutes for presentation and 4 minutes for questions). Four presentations were given the perfect score of 5 by researches of the Keio Institute of Advanced Research. In addition, this is the first time in 5 years that there was a face-to-face due to the pandemic.

The biology club presented posters in the “Result Presentation Division” on “Clostridium Tertium Produces Butyric Acid” and the “Plan Presentation Division” on “The Effect of Preventing Sunburn in Hairless Mice and Improving Intestinal Flora by Oral Intake of Cacaonibs.” Unfortunately, both presentations did not receive a prize. Since they were done by second graders with little experience in the biology club of an ordinary high school, breaking through the preliminary round and making it into the final round to compete with students from SSH was remarkable.
